Just Like Goober

A working suburban mom, a curious baby boy, and a whole lotta life

Joplin Bound November 10, 2011

And you know who’s in Joplin, right? Cheryl of course! And Freddy, Michael, and Ryan!! Hubby and the Goober and I are piling in the car tomorrow morning to make the 4+ hour drive to see our friends. Honestly, I don’t think our kids have spent more than an hour together since Goober’s been born. They’re gone so much, that when they do come in town, everyone is vying for their time, naps never match up, travelling wear’s the kids out, etc. I’m so excited to have them all to ourselves for 48 hours, watching the kids play together all weekend, and just chilling out without trying to shove 4 months worth of quality time into a couple hours. Also, I get to partake of Cheryl’s famous chili, her even more famous cocktails, and see all the cool stuff she’s been crafting lately.

About this time last year we tried to go visit Cheryl and family when they were still in Minnesota. Goober and Ryan were 5 months old, we bought plane tickets and everything, and then Minneapolis got hit with a very early, very heavy snow storm. Our flight was cancelled while we sat at the airport. Very disappointing. I never did get to see their house in Minnesota and they lived there for over 3 years! So I am making sure that we get to Joplin this year to visit them. Hopefully we have no freak weather or random children coming down with the plague or anything else weird to keep us from our destination (knock on wood). Wish us luck!

What I Did On My Summer Vacation (but not really) September 28, 2011

Originally I planned to write a big post about our trip to South Carolina, full of descriptions and anecdotes of all we saw and did. I really enjoy reading other bloggers’ accounts of their vacations and I wanted to do the same thing myself. However, it’s strange, while we were gone,  I got very weird about people calling me and wanting to know all about our trip, what we were doing, how Goober liked things. Even with my own parents! All of a sudden, this little voice in my head said, “You’re on VACATION! You don’t have to talk to people! Ignore them!!” So I did. I made a point to text my folks occasionally, let them know we were safe, but then I didn’t answer the phone, I didn’t return voicemails. My current record of vacations is once every 4 years, so I was going to make this one count.

Now that we’ve returned, I still have that feeling. It’s kinda stupid, but I’m not feeling inclined to share the details of our trip. Part of it is laziness, for sure. Seven days is a lot to cover. Still, part of it wants to hold it like a secret, a little piece of information that just belongs to Hubby, Goober, and I. Even if 80% of it was spent with my in-laws, that other 20% is extremely special to me, our first trip as a family of 3.

I have no problem sharing pictures of our trip though (I know, I don’t make sense to me either)!

I’m not sure this counts as breaking radio silence, but as soon as I upload all our pictures I’ll give a full rundown of our trip. Also, a quick shout out to Cheryl of That’s What Che Said for awarding me with The Versatile Blogger Award! THANKS CHERYL!!! A whole post about that is forthcoming, as soon as I dig myself out of my inbox at work and laundry at home!

The Power of Girlfriends August 12, 2011

This time tomorrow, 4 of my best girlfriends and I will be lounging in the sun, floating down the river in what will hopefully become the first of many Annual Mom’s Weekend Float trips. Every last one of us has had a baby sometime in the last 18 months and every last one of us NEEDS this. No kids, no husbands, no diapers, no chores, no errands, NO NOTHING! Just sun and water and food and drinks (the adult kind!). There will be plenty of gossip and girl gab and a fair amount of bitching about our husbands (it’s natural). Also, did I mention no diapers? NO DIAPERS!

Of course we will miss our kiddos and our husbands.

How could I not miss these guys???

But there is something about spending time with just my girlfriends that just refreshes me. It’s like pressing a reset button on all my stress and anxiety. I get to take myself out of the roles of Wife and Mommy and return to my roots, to be the me that I was before I became the adult that I am now. I wouldn’t change one minute, one second of my very blessed life for anything in the world. However, to get to set all of that down, just for 24 hours, and just have fun, is very very cool.

As in, where my little family will be vacationing at some point in September. The actual dates aren’t important, since you and I don’t know each other that well yet, and I’m a little suspicious of just giving you my itinerary. You might try to break into my house and steal my dirty dishes or the 5 year old t.v. that likes to turn itself off randomly. Just assume that at some point in September I will be gone for a week.

We’re heading to the Hilton Head area for wedding and staying with friends, unrelated to the wedding, who just happen to live in the same area. We’re very lucky that this all comes together, otherwise we would be unable to afford such a trip. This will be Hubby’s and my first vacation since our honeymoon, almost 4 years ago, and it will be Goober’s first vacation ever! We’re very excited to take him to the beach and see his reaction to the never ending sand, water, and waves. I can’t wait.

What I am less excited about, though, is the prospect of making the 14 hour trip by car. We’re breaking the drive up into one day of 9 hours, where we’ll stop in Atlanta to spend the night with family, and then a 4-5 hour drive to Hilton Head the next day. On the way home, we’ll reverse it, driving 4-5 hrs to Atlanta, then getting up early the next morning to finish the drive home. In case that hasn’t registered yet, I will be spending, combined, almost 30 HOURS in a CAR with a 15 MONTH OLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So, oh wise and wonderful internet, I am desperately seeking suggestions on how to make this time pass with as few migraines as possible. How do you entertain a 15 month old in a car for that long? He doesn’t really care about tv, and I don’t want to start that addiction quite yet, so we will not be bringing a portable dvd player. I’m open to just about anything else though. Please! Send me your stories, examples and suggestions. Also, if you have experience doing fun family junk near Hilton Head, send me that info too. Neither the Hubby or I have ventured to any part of the east coast before, so we would like to get as much out of this as possible. We’re considering excursions to Savannah, GA and Charleston, SC… is this a good or bad idea? Should we just stay on the beach for 5 days or are there fun things to explore nearby that won’t make the toddler go berserk?
